Reflecting the Lodge's country manor elegance, this romantic octagonal restaurant is one of the best in the state. Intimate tables are clustered close to a roaring fireplace with room between for private conversation. Expanding Hawai'i regional cuisine, the changing menu includes the signature crispy seared moi (a fish once reserved for Hawaiian chiefs). Start with tiny roasted quail on baby greens and finish with a warm pear soufflé (ordered in advance). Expect visiting chefs as well as a master sommelier who provides exclusive wine pairings. Service is flawless. Reservations essential. Jacket required. AE, DC, MC, V. No lunch.

The Hulopo'e overlooks the wide sweep of the bay and offers an extensive breakfast buffet, lunch, and dinner in airy comfort. Choose between indoor or outdoor tables, with comfortable chairs upholstered in beige and burgundy. Cream-colored walls provide a restful backdrop indoors, and pale pink umbrellas shade the terrace dining. Fresh baked pastries and made-to-order omelets ensure your day will start well. For lunch the 'ahi or mahimahi tacos is a good choice; at dinner the daily fish special, the baked Pacific prawns stuffed with Dungeness crab, or Kurobuta pork chops marinated in Hoisin sauce with Lana'i pineapple relish are all local favorites. Their chocolate cake is perfect. Reservations essential. AE, DC, MC, V.

With the only bar and comparatively fine dining in Lana'i City, this is a lively spot, right at the Hotel Lana'i. Louisiana-style ribs, Cajun-style shrimp, and gumbo add up to what chef Henry Clay Richardson calls "American country," but he brings it back home with island venison and locally caught fish. A fireplace and paintings by local artists add to the upcountry feel. Large parties can be accommodated and are sometimes quite noisy. MC, V.

The fine dining room at the Four Seasons Resort La'na'i at Manele Bay shimmers with crystal chandeliers and gleaming silver in a serene setting illuminated by floor-to-ceiling etched-glass doors. Executive chef Oliver Beckert offers an upscale version of Italian comfort food designed around fresh local fish. Puna goat cheese ravioli with pine nuts and baby vegetables, and onaga (red snapper) served alla Puttanesca, with artichoke puree, and a spicy tomato and caper sauce, are good choices. Service is nonintrusive but attentive. Reservations essential. AE, DC, MC, V. No lunch.

Poolside at the Four Seasons Resort Lana'i at Manele Bay, the Oceon Grill offers informal lunch and dinner in a splendid setting. The big yellow and white umbrellas are cool and cheerful, and bamboo-inspired upholstered chairs in yellow and green are deliciously comfortable. Favorite lunch items include the kalua (pit-roasted) pork and cheese quesadilla, or the rare 'ahi tuna salade Nicoise with fresh island greens. The dinner menu includes seasonal fresh island fish -- onaga (red snapper), opakapaka (white snapper), and hapu'p'u (sea bass), or an herb crusted rack of lamb. The view of Hulopo'e Bay is stunning, the service is Four Season's brand of cool aloha, and the decor is impeccable. AE, DC, MC, V.

Floor-to-ceiling glass doors open onto formal gardens and lovely vistas of the mist-clad mountains. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served in an informal atmosphere with attentive service. Try poached eggs on crab cakes to start the day and a free-range strip loin with pesto mashed potatoes to finish it. A complete wine list and the soothing sounds of the grand piano in the Great Hall in the evening complete the ambience. AE, DC, MC, V.
