The first facility to open in Vail in 1962, the sprawling lodge -- modeled after the Lodge at Sun Valley -- is popular with skiers because of its fabulous location only 150 feet from the village's main lift, the Vista Bahn. Ski valets lean your skis up against the lift every morning (after the complimentary wax, of course) and collect your gear for drying in the evening. The quality and size of the rooms varies tremendously. The older wing has smaller, individually-decorated rooms with a homey feel, while the newer wing has larger suites with modern touches like heated marble floors in the bathrooms and gas fireplaces. Mickey's piano bar is a favored après-ski spot. www.lodgeatvail.rockresorts.com. 79 rooms, 46 suites, 44 1-, 2- and 3-bedroom condos. In-room: VCR, Wi-Fi. This three-story log home dates from 1915, making it one of the town's oldest residence. The owners, Tom and Cathy Sullivan, converted it into a charming inn with theme rooms. Business was brisk, so they added the neighboring Eagle Street Bed & Breakfast and the Grouse Creek Inn. These properties have two-person hot tubs, river rock fireplaces, and private decks or patios overlooking the Eagle River. Hearty breakfasts and afternoon wine and cheese are included. www.minturninn.com. 18 rooms, 1 cabin. In-room: no a/c. In-hotel: no-smoking rooms. AE, D, MC, V. Full breakfast.

With a magnificent antler chandelier and towering windows opening out onto the mountain, the lobby of this ski-in ski-out hotel manages to be both cozy and grand. Rooms are designed with skiers in mind, so they have nice touches like heated towel racks. Perhaps the ultimate in pampering is stepping into your warmed and waiting ski boots. Once the boots are off, enjoy a hot toddy by the outdoor fire pit. The on-site Allegria Spa and the nearby Beaver Creek Golf Club (with preferred tee times for guests) make this hotel popular with nonskiers. www.beavercreek.hyatt.com. 275 rooms, 31 suites. It's the sense of family tradition and European elegance that makes the Sonnenalp Resort the most Tyrolean of all hotels in the faux-Tyrolean village of Vail. Four generations of the Fassler family have worked in the hotel business, and the Sonnenalp showcases their expertise not only in the Bavarian architecture and decor (stucco walls hatched with wood beams and balconies with flower boxes) but also in the impeccable manners of everyone from front-desk receptionists to the waiters at Ludwig's. Room configurations vary from two-story suites to cozy rooms barely bigger than the overstuffed beds. The first-floor spa is set around an alcove fireplace, but the indoor heated pool flows outdoors and fronts a beautiful garden beside Gore Creek. At this writing, the Sonnenalp is undergoing a major expansion. www.sonnenalp.com. 2 rooms, 90 suites. In-room: ethernet. In-hotel: 2 restaurants, bar, pools, gym, spa. AE, D, DC, MC, V.

With its elegantly angled blue-slate roof, this sprawling property is one of the area's handsomest accommodations. Wisps of smoke from the fireplaces found in many rooms rise above, giving the place a homey feel. There are plenty of choices for rooms, including one- to five-bedroom condominiums, many with balconies that let you gaze over the tops of the trees. The location is perfect -- the ski-in ski-out hotel is a short walk from the main plaza at Beaver Creek. www.thecharter.com. 65 rooms, 115 condominiums. In-room: refrigerator, DVD, VCR, ethernet. The stone and timber Ritz-Carlton at Bachelor Gulch crowns Beaver Creek Mountain above the bustle of Vail Valley like one of King Ludwig's Bavarian castles. Inside this imposing hotel are all the amenities any royal might desire -- panoramic views from most of the 237 rooms, stone fireplaces in over a third, and high, plush beds in all. When you're finished hiking or skiing (or spending some time gazing out at your kingdom from a balcony), head to the 21,000-square-foot spa and fitness center for a dose of bottled oxygen at the fresh-air salon or a dip in the cascading grotto hot tub. For cocktails and cigars there's the intimate Fly Fishing Library (worth a look just to see the fishing lures on the walls). www.ritzcarlton.com. 208 rooms, 29 suites. In-room: safe, dial-up. Down-to-earth yet luxurious is the best way to describe this ski-in ski-out hotel. Despite its size, it manages to maintain an intimate feel. Rooms reflect a "mountain eclectic" decor, with rich plaid and floral fabrics, wicker furniture, and wrought-iron lamps. The restaurant has garnered acclaim for its outstanding grilled foods and fine selection of wines. Guests have access to the adjoining Aria Spa & Club and the full-service health club with racquetball, squash, and basketball courts. The best deals at any time of year are the packages, which might include lift tickets in winter or sports massages in summer. www.vailcascade.com. 292 rooms, 27 suites, 78 condominiums. In-hotel: restaurant, bar, tennis courts, pool, gym, spa, children's programs (ages 1-12). AE, DC, MC, V.
