A huge copper mural of cowboys and cacti and a wide view of the rugged Santa Catalina Mountains grace the lobby of the Hilton's golf and tennis resort. This friendly upscale property draws families and conventioneers, some taking advantage of lower summer rates for the excellent sports facilities, the spa, and the pool complex with a 140-foot waterslide and children's play pool. Rooms, either in private one-bedroom casitas or the main hotel building, are decorated in desert tones of taupe, sand, and gold, and more than half of them have kiva-style fireplaces. www.hiltonelconquistador.com. 328 rooms, 57 suites, 43 casitas. In-room: dial-up. In-hotel: 5 restaurants, bar, golf courses, tennis courts, pools, gym, spa, bicycles, children's programs (ages 4-12), no-smoking rooms, minibar. AE, D, DC, MC, V.

Set amid saguaro forests and mesquite groves in the Tucson Mountains (yet only 15 minutes to downtown), the city's newest -- and largest -- resort opened in early 2005. Massive sun-bleached stone walls blend rather than compete with the natural surroundings, and there are stunning views from interior dining areas and lounges. Outside terraces, with chairs and sofas clustered around kiva fireplaces, overlook the pools and golf course and provide views of the city. Resort amenities include an on-site Starbucks and a full-service spa. www.starrpassmarriott.com. 538 rooms, 37 suites. In-room: dial-up. In-hotel: 4 restaurants, room service, bar, golf courses, pools, gym, spa, concierge, no-smoking rooms. AE, D, MC, V.

Though new housing subdivisions are encroaching on this family-oriented guest ranch in the Tucson Mountains northwest of town, greenhorns can feel like they've escaped to a slower, simpler vacation here. Guest rooms are in eight casitas. Those in the older structures, made of Mexican stucco, have fireplaces and wood-beam ceilings; rooms in the newer, adobe-brick buildings are larger and more modern. In addition to horseback riding offered twice daily, you can enjoy cookouts, hayrides, and evening entertainment such as squaredancing and cowboy roping tricks. There are also hammocks, a heated pool, and a hot tub to relax those post-equestrian muscles. www.lazykbar.com. 19 rooms, 4 suites. In-room: no phone, no TV. In-hotel: pool, airport shuttle, no-smoking rooms. AE, D, MC, V. Closed June-Aug. 3 meals.

This is one of the most luxurious of the big resorts, with dramatic stone architecture and an 80-foot waterfall cascading down the mountains. Rooms, facing either the Catalinas or the golf course and city, are modern and elegantly furnished in muted earth tones and light woods; each bath has a miniature TV, a double-wide tub, and bubble bath. Dining options include everything from poolside snacks at Bill's Grill to fine Continental cuisine at the Ventana Room. The scenic Ventana Canyon trailhead is steps away, and there's a free shuttle to nearby Sabino Canyon. www.loewshotels.com. 384 rooms, 14 suites. In-room: dial-up. Perfect for couples with differing ideas on how to spend a vacation, Tucson National is both a premier golf resort (it hosts the Tucson Open) and a full-service European-style spa, where you can be coiffed, waxed, wrapped, and worked over to your heart's content. Most of the rooms, although not technically suites, are spacious with separate sitting areas. Some casitas have full kitchens and dining rooms. Although this resort is a little farther from central Tucson than others, it's still convenient to shopping and restaurants in the thriving Northwest area. www.omnihotels.com. 143 rooms, 24 suites. Vying with the Hilton El Conquistador and Loews Ventana for convention business, this sprawling, pale pink resort offers views of the Santa Catalina Mountains above and the city below. It specializes in relaxation with an emphasis on fun: the golf, tennis, and spa facilities are top-notch, and the huge pool complex has an impressively long water slide, as well as a swim-up bar and grill for those who can't bear to leave the water. On-site kids' programs, including weekly "dive-in movies," make for a vacation the whole family can enjoy. Janos, one of Tucson's top restaurants, is also here. www.starwood.com. 455 rooms, 32 suites. In-room: dial-up. Originally the 1912 homestead of William and Mary Watson, this laid-back lodging offers Southwestern character, attentive service, and all the amenities you expect at a major resort. The Watsons' original living room, with beautiful, dried ocotillo branches draped along the ceiling and antique furnishings, is now a comfortable lounge off the main lobby. The couple probably never envisioned anything like the Sonoran Spa, offering hot desert-stone massages and three-mud body masks. Spacious rooms have wrought-iron beds and Mission-style furniture. Borrow a bike or take a stroll along the beautiful and well-marked nature trails. www.westwardlook.com. 244 rooms. A 3,000-acre working cattle ranch run by the hospitable True family since 1965, this place is the real deal. You can ride up to four times daily, hike in the mountains, enjoy a hayride cookout, and compete in team cattle penning. Most rooms retain their original Western furniture, and newer deluxe rooms have whirlpool baths or fireplaces. A recently completed spa and fitness center bring even more comforts to this well-endowed but authentic setting. Rates include all meals, riding, and daily entertainment such as weekend rodeos, country line dancing, telescopic stargazing, and campfire sing-alongs. www.wsranch.com. 24 rooms, 17 suites.
