Perched on a 300-foot cliff overlooking Waipio Bay, you can sometimes spot turtles swimming below this 2-acre multimillion-dollar estate. The brand new Bali cottage is wildly popular, decked out entirely in elegant Balinese imports. In the main house, the Penthouse and King suite each have breathtaking views, private entrances, lanai, and kitchenettes. You're free to pick fruit and flowers from the lush grounds. This fine condo complex, which wraps around the Ka'anapali golf course's sixth fairway, offers several perks, most notably air-conditioning in the units and access to a fully outfitted beach cabana on a semi-private beach. The complex itself isn't exactly on the beach -- it's a quick golf-cart-trip away. While resort guests get scolded for dragging lounge chairs onto neighboring resort beaches, you can relax in luxury. Not only will you have beach chairs at your disposal, but a full kitchen and lounge area, too. The privately managed units are tastefully decorated with modern appliances and spacious bathrooms. Impeccably stylish, subdued, and relaxing describe most Four Seasons properties; this one fronting award-winning Wailea beach is no exception. Thoughtful luxuries -- like Evian spritzers poolside and room-service attendants who toast your bread in-room -- earned this Maui favorite its reputation. Charm sets this inn apart, tucked into a corner of a busy street in the heart of Lahaina. Filled with Victorian and Asian furnishings, it's reminiscent of a southern plantation home. Secluded lanai draped with hanging plants face a central courtyard, pool, and a garden pavilion perfect for morning coffee. Each guest room or suite is decorated differently, with hardwood floors, French doors, slightly dowdy antiques, and four-poster beds. (We think number 10 is nicest.) From your giant corner window, you can look down at the famed Kea Lani villas, and know you've scored the same great locale at a fraction of the price. Individually owned apartments are well-cared for and feature top-of-the-line amenities, such as stainless-steel kitchens, marble floors, and valuable artwork. The property is no-smoking and an underground parking garage keeps vehicles out of the blazing Kihei sun. www.drhmaui.com. 71 units. In-room: kitchen, VCR, Wi-Fi. Most of the rooms here are positioned on fantastic Mokapu Beach. A giant ceremonial canoe enhances the lobby area. Outside you can find exotic gardens, waterfalls, and reflecting ponds. If butler-drawn baths and brocade drapery are your cup of tea, book a room at this elegant hillside property. Although not set directly on the sand, the resort does command views of D. T. Fleming Beach, and Honolua Bay -- and the multilevel pool and two hot tubs are open 24 hours. The grounds are private and secluded, despite being in the midst of Kapalua's collection of hotels, shops, restaurants, and golf courses. A full-time cultural adviser, Clifford Nae'ole, educates employees and guests alike in Hawaiian traditions. Tuesday night Slack Key guitar performances are not to be missed. This is a great jumping-off point for golfers -- privileges are available at three championship courses, and the island of Lana'i, with its two renowned courses is a quick ferry ride away. The dining is outstanding here; the decor needs some attention. www.ritzcarlton.com/resorts/kapalua. 548 rooms. In-room: safe, dial-up. Two-story cottages, each divided into four units, distinguish the Royal Lahaina from other mega-resorts. The first buildings built in Ka'anapali, the gracious cottages open to the trade winds on two sides and have a nostalgic, old Hawaiian feel. The "deluxe" units in the 12-story tower aren't really deluxe -- the property as a whole is slated for a revamp, but it's one of the less-expensive options on Ka'anapali Beach. The Oceanside Beach House is a two-bedroom cottage with its own pool, perfect for entertaining guests in truly royal fashion. The walkway to the wedding gazebo is lined with stepping-stones engraved with the names of past brides and grooms and their wedding dates. www.hawaiianhotels.com. 516 rooms. Meandering gardens, spacious rooms, and an on-site restaurant distinguish this large condominium complex. Primarily a time-share property, a few units are available as vacation rentals. The upper floors benefit from their height -- matchless ocean views stretch away from private lanai. The oceanfront penthouse, which accommodates up to eight, is a bargain at $435 during peak season. Kids can enjoy their own pool area near a putting green and ponds filled with giant koi. Raul Bermudez, the restaurant's chef took first place in the 2004 "Taste of Lahaina" festival. www.sands-of-kahana.com. 162 units. In-room: no a/c (some), kitchen, dial-up. Set among dense gardens on Ka'anapali's best stretch of beach, the Sheraton offers a quieter, more understated atmosphere than its neighboring resorts. The open-air lobby has a crisp, cool look with minimal furnishings and decor, and sweeping views of the pool area and beach. The majority of the spacious rooms come with ocean views; only one of the six buildings has rooms with mountain or garden views. The swimming pool looks like a natural lagoon, with rock waterways and wooden bridges. Best of all, the hotel sits next to the 80-foot-high "Black Rock," from which divers leap in a nightly torch-lighting ritual. www.starwood.com/hawaii. 510 rooms. In-room: safe, refrigerator. The cascading waterfall in the lobby of this hotel gives way to an "aquatic playground" with five heated swimming pools, abundant waterfalls (15 at last count), lagoons complete with pink flamingos, and a premier beach. The water features combined with a spa and fitness center, and privileges at two 18-hole golf courses make this an active resort -- great for families. Relaxation is by no means forgotten. Elegant dark-wood furnishings in the rooms accentuate the crisp linens of "Heavenly Beds." Rooms in the Beach Tower are newer but slightly smaller than those in the Ocean Tower. The 13,000-square-foot Heavenly Spa features 11 treatment rooms and a yoga studio. www.starwood.com/hawaii. 761 rooms. The Wailea Resort started out with three upscale condominium complexes named, appropriately, 'Ekahi, 'Elua, and 'Ekolu (One, Two, and Three). The individually owned units, managed by Destination Resorts Hawai'i, represent some of the best values in this high-class neighborhood. All benefit from daily house-keeping, air-conditioning, high-speed Internet, free long distance, lush landscaping, and preferential play at the neighboring world-class golf courses and tennis courts. You're likely to find custom appliances and sleek furnishings befitting the million-dollar locale. The concierges here will stock your fridge with groceries -- even hard-to-find dietary items -- for a nominal fee. 'Ekolu, farthest from the water, is the most affordable, and benefits from a hill-side view; 'Ekahi is a large V-shape property focusing on Keawakapu beach; 'Elua has 24-security security and overlooks Ulua beach. www.drhmaui.com. 594 units.
