Shoppers might wear out their Manolos here; the hotel is connected to O'ahu's biggest mall, the Ala Moana Shopping Center, by a pedestrian ramp, and it's a four-block stroll away from the Victoria Ward Centers. Business travelers are walking one block in the opposite direction to the Hawai'i Convention Center. Swimmers, surfers, and beachgoers make the two-minute walk to Ala Moana Beach Park across the street. Studio accommodations have cherrywood furnishings, kitchenettes, flat-screen wall-mounted TVs, and lanai with glass railings and outdoor seating. One- and two-bedroom suites are also available. Honeymooners and others seeking seclusion amidst the frenetic activity of the Waikiki scene find it here. Halekulani exemplifies the translation of its name -- the "house befitting heaven." From the moment you step inside the lobby, the attention to detail and service wraps you in luxury. It begins with private registration in your guest room and extends to the tiniest of details, such as complimentary tickets to the Honolulu Symphony, Contemporary Art Museum, and Honolulu Academy of Arts. Spacious guest rooms, artfully appointed in marble and wood, have ocean views and extra large lanai. If you want to honeymoon in the ultimate style, we recommend the 2,125-square-foot Vera Wang Suite, created by the noted wedding dress designer herself. It's entirely Vera, right down to the signature soft lavender color scheme. Outside, the resort's freshwater pool has an orchid design created from more than 1½ million glass mosaic tiles. Gray's Beach, which fronts the hotel just beyond the pool, is small and has been known to disappear at high tide. www.halekulani.com. 412 rooms, 44 suites. In-room: safe, DVD, dial-up, Wi-Fi. This slim high-rise fronts Ala Wai Yacht Harbor at the 'ewa edge of Waikiki, close to Honolulu's downtown business districts, the convention center, and Ala Moana's outdoor mall. There's no beach here, but Ala Moana Beach Park is a 10-minute stroll away along the Harbor, and the hotel also offers complimentary shuttle service around Waikiki and its surrounding beaches. It's the only resort in Waikiki with a golf course -- the 27-hole Arnold Palmer-designed golf course is in 'Ewa Beach, about a 45-minute ride from the hotel. The sleek, modern Prince looks to Asia both in its high-style decor and such pampering touches as the traditional oshiburi (chilled hand towel) for refreshment upon check-in. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the harbor sunsets make up for the lack of lanai. www.hawaiiprincehotel.com. 521 rooms, 57 suites. In-room: safe, dial-up. Location, location, location. The HHV sprawls over 22 acres on Waikiki's widest stretch of beach. It has the perfect neighbor in Fort DeRussy, whose green lawns create a buffer zone to the high-rise lineup of central Waikiki. The Hilton makes the most of its prime real estate -- surrounding the five hotel towers with lavish gardens, an aquatic playground of pools, a lagoon, cascading waterfalls, koi ponds, penguins, and pink flamingos. Rainbow Tower, with its landmark 31-story mural, has knockout views of Diamond Head. Rooms in all towers have lanai offering ocean, city, or Waikiki beach views. More of a city than a village, the HHV has an ABC sundry store, a bookstore, Louis Vuitton, and a post office. Culture comes in the form of an outpost of the Bishop Museum and the contemporary Hawaiian art gracing the public spaces. It even has its own pier, docking point for the Atlantis Submarine. The sheer volume of options, including free stuff (lei-making, poolside hula shows, and fireworks), make the HHV a good choice for families. This is a megaresort and a convention destination. On the positive side, that means unusual perks, like check-in kiosks (complete with room keys) in the baggage claim area at the airport. On the negative side, it means that there's usually big doings afoot on-site. Be sure to try the family recipe Irish soda bread; it's in the bread baskets at the exclusive Bali by the Sea, but you can also get it at various cafés. www.hiltonhawaiianvillage.com. 3,432 rooms, 365 suites, 264 condominiums. Forty-five minutes and a world away from the bustle of Waikiki, this sleek, 17-story resort anchors the still-developing Ko'Olina Resort and Marina on O'ahu's leeward coastline. Honeymooners, NFL Pro Bowlers, and even local residents looking for a "neighbor island" experience without the hassle of catching a flight come to 'Ihilani for first-class R&R. The resort sits on one of Ko Olina's seven lagoons and features a lu'au cove, tennis garden, wedding chapel, yacht marina, and a Ted Robinson-designed 18-hole championship golf facility. Rooms here are spacious with 650 square feet; marble bathrooms with deep soaking tubs; spacious private lanai with teak furnishings, in-room CD players; and high-tech control systems (lights, temperature controls). The larger villas (1,240 square feet) have three TVs, full kitchens, and separate living and dining areas. Situated on 30 acres of Ko Olina, fronting a lagoon, this resort has two pools (one with sandy-beach bottom), a fitness center, four outdoor hot tubs (including one overlooking the ocean that's ideal for sunset soaks). The high octane mai tais at this resort's outdoor Mai Tai Bar made the drink famous. But the drinks aren't the only thing that's legendary at the Pink Palace of the Pacific, so nicknamed for its cotton-candy color. The Royal was built in 1927 by Matson Navigation Company for its luxury-cruise passengers. A modern tower has since been added, but we're partial to the romance and architectural detailing of the Royal's historic wing with its canopy beds, Queen Anne-style desks, and color motifs that range from soft mauve to soothing sea foam. If you want a lanai for sunset viewing, however, rooms in the oceanfront tower are your best bet. The Royal has bragging rights to a private beach on some of the widest sands in central Waikiki, and its Abhasa Spa offers Zen-inspired massage in the palm-fringed gardens. Outrageous rates of $1.50 per night were the talk of the town when the "First Lady of Waikiki" opened her doors in 1901. The Hawai'i Calls radio program was broadcast from the veranda during the 1940s and '50s. Today the Moana is still a wedding and honeymoon favorite with its sweeping main staircase and period furnishings in its historic main wing, the Moana. You can renew your wedding vows during the Moana's weekly Promise Me Again ceremony held Saturday evenings underneath the stars of the Banyan Courtyard. In the late 1950s, the Diamond Head Tower was built. In the '70s, the Surfrider hotel went up next door -- all three merged into one hotel in the 1980s. Towering over its neighbors on the prow of Waikiki's famous sands, the Sheraton is center stage on Waikiki Beach.
