Just a few minutes from the mall and the mountain, this hotel on the town's main drag is a good, if sometimes noisy, find. The modern exterior is opened up with huge windows that take full advantage of the view; the lobby reveals a Southwestern influence. Rooms are comfortable, if not luxurious, with plenty of down pillows and comforters. Most have balconies or terraces, and a few have hot tubs. A continental breakfast is included in the room rate, as is après-ski wine and cheese. www.hotelaspen.com. 37 rooms, 8 suites. In-room: refrigerator, VCR. In-hotel: pool, airport shuttle. One of the state's truly grand hotels since it opened in 1889, Hotel Jerome is an elegant treasure trove of Victoriana. The sumptuous public rooms have five kinds of wallpaper, antler sconces, and more than $60,000 worth of rose damask curtains, as well as crystal chandeliers, intricate woodwork, and gold-laced floor tiling. Guest rooms are generously sized, with high ceilings, sprawling beds, and huge bathtubs. The restaurants are held in high regard, and the J-Bar is legendary. The hotel even has several ghosts (inquire about the elegant grandfather clock in the lobby). Ask about "ski free" packages. www.hoteljerome.com. 77 rooms, 15 suites. In-room: DVD, dial-up. The focal point of this dramatic inn is a very modern, 28-foot-tall stone-and-concrete fireplace. The smallish but quaint rooms contain either intricate carved applewood or ironwood beds (lenado is Spanish for wood, and much of it appears throughout the hotel). You'll also find antique armoires and wood-burning stoves, in addition to modern amenities such as cable TV. Rates include a full breakfast, served in the urbane bar area, which is also a great place to enjoy an evening aperitif. www.hotellenado.com. 19 rooms. In-hotel: bar. AE, DC, MC, V. Full breakfast.

It began as a nightclub, but this little lodge's party days are in the past. Today it's a good choice for skiers because of its prime location, just two blocks from the mall and three blocks from Lift 1A on Aspen Mountain. The somewhat dated rooms are furnished with pretty brass or cherrywood beds. All rooms are accessible from the outside, which makes the lodge convenient for families. Nine apartments with full kitchens and two log cabins are also available. www.limelite-lodge.com. 63 rooms, 9 apartments. In-room: refrigerator. In-hotel: pools, some pets allowed. AE, D, DC, MC, V. The Nell is the only true ski-in ski-out property in Aspen. Belgian wool carpets and overstuffed couches distinguish the lobby. The luxurious rooms have fireplaces, beds piled with down comforters, and large marble baths. Equally superior is the staff, which anticipates your needs. The Montagna restaurant ($$$$) serves delicious New American fare. In summer the most sought after tables are on the patio with views of Aspen Mountain; even your dog can enjoy a gourmet meal. The bar hosts one of town's most fashionable après-ski scenes. www.thelittlenell.com. 77 rooms, 15 suites. In-room: safe, VCR. This ski-in ski-out property, under the same management as the Wildwood Lodge next door, is built into Snowmass Mountain. It's a sprawling complex -- virtually everything you need is under one roof. After a morning on the slopes, warm up in one of the hot tubs or the steam room. Rooms and suites feature subdued but attractive decor, with all the expected amenities. Condos are also available, with full use of facilities. www.silvertreehotel.com. 262 rooms, 15 suites, 200 condos. In-room: safe, VCR. Aspen's hippest new hotel, the Sky has a sleek style and slopeside locale that make it ideal for those in search of something a bit different. The lobby, with its black walls and oversized white leather chairs -- think Alice in Wonderland -- leads to the ultracool and ultracrowded 39 Degrees bar and the daily "altitude adjustment" happy hour with complimentary wine. Rooms, though small, are unforgettable because of their yellow walls, white headboards, and black accents. Signature touches like Frette linens, Aveda bath products, and your own bottle of oxygen make the Sky stand out from the rest. www.theskyhotel.com. 90 rooms. In-room: VCR. This motel has a great location in the heart of Aspen, but its rooms, with rough-wood paneling and dated furniture, are in need of a face-lift. The reasonable prices make it a good choice for a family on a budget; many of the rooms are quite large. The rustic lobby with its stone fireplace and wood beams is a convivial gathering place for the complimentary continental breakfast and afternoon tea. www.snowflakeinn.com. 14 rooms, 24 suites. This hotel is a memorable one, even by Aspen's exacting standards. The august reception area is comfortably furnished with overstuffed chairs, soft suede pillows, leather-topped tables, and rawhide lamp shades. The rooms follow suit with dark-wood furniture, muted colors, and such signature touches as bowls of fresh fruit. Luxurious baths are stocked with Bijan toiletries. Slightly removed from the hustle and bustle of the Village Mall, the Stonebridge Inn's boxy exterior does little to reveal its true character. It's one of the nicest lodging options in Snowmass. The lobby and bar are streamlined and elegant. The cozy, window-ringed Artisan restaurant ($$-$$$$) offers simple, hearty preparations of the freshest regional cuisine (often picked or caught the same day). Rooms, all with two queen beds, aren't fancy, but are comfortably appointed. A continental breakfast is included in the rate. The Stonebridge also rents out the adjacent two- and four-bedroom Tamarack Townhouses. Ask about "stay and ski" packages. www.stonebridgeinn.com. 90 rooms, 5 suites, 28 condos.
